Multilayer PCB Manufacturing
Plan the stackup before releasing the multilayer board.
Manufacture multilayer circuit boards with layer construction, interconnections, and electrical requirements reviewed together. Give the fabrication team a defined stackup instead of relying on layer count alone.
Your build brief
Define the Next Build
- Gerber layers, drill files, and layer naming
- Stackup drawing or proposed construction
- Material and copper requirements
- Impedance notes, quantity, and delivery target
Engineering focus
Make the Manufacturing Scope Clear
01
Layer Construction
Describe the layer order, intended copper distribution, dielectric requirements, and finished thickness. Distinguish mandatory material requirements from a stackup proposal that can be reviewed.
02
Interconnection Definition
Identify through, blind, or buried connections and the layers they join. Advanced via constructions need to be reviewed with the proposed fabrication sequence.
03
Electrical & Mechanical Coordination
Provide impedance targets where needed and identify the signal layers involved. Confirm the finished thickness and critical openings against connectors, card guides, and enclosure mounting.

What to Define Before Release
| Requirement | What to Define |
|---|---|
| Stackup status | Approved construction or a proposed construction for review. |
| Signal requirements | Critical layers, reference relationships, and any impedance targets. |
| Build constraints | Copper, finished thickness, via construction, and mechanical envelope. |

Project questions
Multilayer PCB Manufacturing FAQ
Does layer count define the whole manufacturing specification?
No. Two boards with the same layer count can have different materials, copper, via structures, and inspection requirements.
Can the prototype stackup be reused for production?
Record the construction approved during evaluation and review it for the production quantity. Do not assume an undocumented prototype stackup is the production specification.
