PCB Design Guidelines for Manufacturing
Manufacturability starts with a design package that explains both the geometry and the intended construction. Review the board outline, layer arrangement, interconnections, and assembly interfaces before treating the Gerber export as a release.
Review the Construction as a Whole
Start with the intended board type and material requirements. Then connect layer order, finished thickness, copper requirements, and via structures. An isolated minimum hole or trace value is not a complete manufacturing specification, and individual limits should not be combined without reviewing the resulting construction.
Use the fabrication drawing to distinguish mandatory requirements from proposals. If the manufacturer may suggest a stackup, say so. If an existing connector forces a finished thickness, identify the controlling feature and its acceptance requirement.
Explain Mechanical Features and Interfaces
Check the outline, mounting holes, slots, and connector access against the product drawings. Use a consistent reference datum for critical dimensions. Where the PCB fits an enclosure, review component height and assembly access as well as the bare-board shape.
For flex or rigid-flex designs, communicate the installed shape, board regions, and bend locations. A flat fabrication outline does not by itself explain the product assembly. Avoid applying a generic bend rule without checking the actual construction and use.
Prepare the Assembly Handoff
Review component orientation, local clearances, test access, and the panel format with the assembly needs. Keep the BOM, placement list, and fabrication revision aligned. If the board has options, release a clear variant definition.
Close the review by recording open questions, approved decisions, and the files used for the quotation. After a design change, re-evaluate the affected interfaces rather than assuming a previous manufacturing review applies to the new revision.
Practical Project Checklist
