How to Order Custom PCBs: Complete Buyer’s Guide

A useful PCB inquiry explains the required deliverable, the design revision, and the decisions that still need review. Start by choosing bare boards, populated assemblies, or a complete product so the manufacturing scope is clear.

Choose the Deliverable before Comparing Quotes

A bare-board quotation covers fabrication. An assembly quotation adds components and soldering in the agreed supply arrangement. A box build may also include housings, wiring, programming, product tests, and packaging. Compare like-for-like scopes rather than treating these as interchangeable products.

For example, two assembly offers may differ because one includes component procurement and functional testing while the other uses supplied parts and visual inspection. Ask which operations and materials are included before interpreting the price difference.

Send Requirements and Identify Open Decisions

For bare boards, prepare the fabrication outputs, board specification, quantity, and requested date. For assemblies, add the BOM, placement data, and supply responsibilities. For complete products, include mechanical drawings, wiring, and test instructions.

Not every early-stage inquiry has a finished package. Send the available information and state what is undecided. A proposed material, missing fixture, or unresolved connector option should be visible as an open item rather than hidden in an assumed specification.

Confirm the Release and Plan the Next Order

Review the quotation against the intended scope, approved files, material decisions, checks, and delivery format. Resolve substitutions and specification changes before production. Keep the accepted package available for future orders.

After evaluation, identify what changes and what remains approved. A repeat order should reference a defined revision and inspection plan. If a prototype becomes a pilot batch, revisit component availability, panel format, packaging, and any tests that will now be repeated across the batch.
